Thanks to everyone for all the prayers and get well wishes for Emma's surgery. Children's Mercy hospital here in Kansas City is a wonderful hospital that obviously had a lot of experience in dealing with children during surgery and more importantly they have taken great lengths to provide a wonderful environment for parents. As parents it seems sometimes that our kids are stronger than us probably because they have no concept of mortality. Jana and I were sick for a week waiting on this day to happen and it really couldn't have happened at a better place.
In the back of our minds was the day that Emma was in the NICU and was going to undergo bowel resectioning surgery to finally get rid of that huge colostomy bag that was so hard to keep on her. Being so sick, when they took her down to surgery, they had to stop because she was losing her vitals under the anesthesia. The doctor stopped the surgery and decided to wait a couple of weeks until she was stronger.

At Children's Mercy before the surgery we voiced our concerns over and over again to the anesthesiologist, the anesthesiologist's nurse, the care nurse, the pre-op counsel nurse, etc. We wanted everyone to know that our Emma is the most precious thing on earth to us and a "common" eye surgery should not be treated as common when it comes to her.
During the Pre-op consultation I gave the nurse Emma's 14 page discharge summary from the NICU and had her copy that for the files. I guess the file become something of legend as on the day of the surgery several nurses told us they had read her file and were amazed. One nurse was amazed that she was born at 27 weeks and was doing so well, then Jana told her no, it was actually 23 weeks and 2 days and you could see her jaw about hit the floor. More proof of the miracles right before our eyes.
Obviously the surgery went fantastic, Emma woke up from the anesthesia early, and she fell asleep on mommy in the wake up room.

Daddy trying to put the surgery gown on Emma
Emma full of joy and laughter, the blue mark over her left eye to mark the surgery
Emma on her tiptoes in her fancy warm hospital socks
Emma's binky/cow. The nurse asked us what she would want when she woke up to make her feel better and they put an ID tag on cow's leg as well.
Mommy holding Emma after surgery. Emma was wheeled to us on a gurney and she was pretty upset. Once she landed on mommy's shoulder the crying stopped and she slept heavily.
You can see the IV in Emma's hand in this pic. The nurse came to take it out and Emma didn't even flinch. She was sound asleep!
Emma cool in mommy's shades with cow riding home.
