Today we were called around 7:45 am from the NICU. They wanted to update us on the happenings from the night. Seems that Abby had some difficulty breathing, and she had to be bagged. Her O2 Sats had fallen to around 30%. This occurred twice during the early morning hours. One reason for this could be due to bronchiospasms that occur when she tightens up her body because of being touched by the nurses, etc. They said this is a common occurrence among young preemies. Also, her blood gases weren't looking good through the night. The last one they did though is showing improvements. As if that weren't enough to deal with, they have mentioned that her chest x-ray is showing that her lungs aren't doing well. This could be due to many factors, and they will continue to watch. They think that her PDA (small duct) has opened again, but they aren't sure. Seems like everything she is going through at this point is just a wait and see situation.
As for Emma she seems to be very agitated lately, and they may put her back on a morphine drip. They did her echo yesterday, and saw that her PDA was open causing her heart to be enlarged. She will be having heart surgery on Monday morning at 7:30 to put a clip on her duct and close it off. Her calcium levels were also low, which will cause her fidget a lot due to her muscles contracting. They are giving her different IV fluids with heightened amounts of calcium to help up her levels which will hopefully calm her down tonight.
We wish we didn't have to deal with any setbacks, but alas that is life in the NICU......
Just stop...
