March for Babies

Can we say out of shape?? Patrick and I took part today in the March for Babies, We elected to walk the shorter route since the last couple of months I've been on bed rest or restricted from exercise. It was a good decision because I was completely worn out. There were nurses, staff, and one neonatalogist from the NICU there walking today (on their day off). These wonderful people aren't only working in the NICU to save our babies, but also give of themselves in their free time to participate in a charity that will help all babies born prematurely. It was inspiring to see so many shirts with the phrase OPR (Overland Park Regional) NICU Superbabies on the back. As we walked with the staff they knew who these babies were by name.

The event itself was more than Pat and I had expected. We knew there would be a crowd, but we didn't expect the thousands of people who were there. Radio Disney was there getting the crowd excited and the children involved. Many families had t-shirts on remembering the children they had lost and honoring the many babies who had survived life in the NICU. We cannot thank everyone enough for the outpouring of support that we have received for the March of Dimes. In our efforts to raise money for this charity, we were able to donate $2250.

After the walk we went to see the girls and noticed that they both had new "condos." These are called isoletes, and they are the next step in getting the girls into cribs one day. From Abby's chest x-ray they've noticed that her lungs are looking cloudy. They think that this is due to fluid getting into the lungs because of the immature aveoli being stretched, which is a typical preemie issue. They are giving her Lasix to help get rid of the fluid. Emma has spent the majority of the day sleeping and chilling out in her new condo. Her drains are still excreting "stuff," and hopefully this is getting her on the track to healing her tummy.

Oh what good news..it is encouraging I am sure to have the girls moved into the isolets. Is there any talk about putting them together in one crib? I have heard that is sometimes done because of the shared space.
I am happy that you both were able to get out a while and do something different. I think it will be good for you both. I have been able to attend one of the marches for alzheimers, working in the booth, since I had my surgery and agree that it is really a big deal. That is the was it is in Kansas City!! People get so invovled.
I will be anxious to hear the next report about the little princesses. They certainly must be strong little girls. Fondly, Vonnie

How sweet those little girls look..It is hard to imagine that they are so small and so developed..who could ever deny that life doesn't begin until birth? Before you know it, they will have their own personalities and it will be so evident to you. When that happens, so many memories of the hardships you are experiencing now will just be forgotten. How proud your parents must be of both of you. Give each one of them a kiss from their "oldest Mies" cousin. Fondly, Vonnie
